Their story
Yarcle is a family farm at Grove Farm, Yarkhill, Herefordshire, that has grown bittersweet cider apples since 1936 and is now run by its fourth generation, with a family elder, Jim, still overseeing harvest. The family began making cider commercially themselves only in 2019, converting a disused 1943 dairy building into a cidery after changes in demand meant larger cider makers no longer wanted their raw fruit. Their cider and perry are wild-fermented on the farm from named varieties including Yarlington Mill, Dabinett and Ball's Bittersweet, described as low-intervention and small-batch, with every batch varying by season. The name Yarcle comes from a Saxon word meaning the slope of a hill.
Traditional Herefordshire orchards at Grove Farm dating from 1936, being restored and expanded; 114 new trees across 33 varieties have recently been grafted onto M25 rootstock to preserve rare varieties and fill gaps in the older plantings.
