Their story
Brakes Cider is a revival of a Nailsea cider business that traded under the Brake family name from the mid-1800s until the early 1970s, when father and son Walter and Leonard Brake ran it. Leonard's descendant Joe Brake relaunched the brand in 2020, around forty years after the original business stopped trading, using apples from some of the same North Somerset orchards his family supplied decades earlier. The cider is blended from more than nine cider apple varieties. It's a small operation without its own visitor premises; its ciders reach drinkers mainly through independent shops and online box schemes rather than a farm shop or cider barn.
