Their story
Bartestree Cider Co is run by the husband-and-wife team Dave and Fiona Matthews from Stalls Cottage in Bartestree, three miles east of Hereford — an area with a long history of perry pear growing going back to Viscount John Scudamore's introduction of French perry trees at nearby Holme Lacy. Dave and Fiona took up perrymaking after being introduced to it by local single-varietal perrymaker Kevin Minchew. They make pure-juice, spontaneously fermented, hand-pressed cider and perry, sold as draught and bottled, in styles including keeved and pet-nat. Perry pear varieties include Moorcroft, Hendre Huffcap, Barland, Barnet, Gin and Thorn. The business attends festivals through the year and welcomes volunteers, particularly at harvest.
